If elected, my plan is to create policies that help businesses and people in Prince George's County. These policies include ensuring an educated workforce, low crime in our county, and maintaining a reasonable minimum wage.
Moreover, I want to ensure that businesses can obtain necessary financing for expansion. This is beneficial because the more businesses expand, more job opportunities are created. In addition, our tax base increases.
Lastly, I would have a hiring preference for county residents for county government jobs. This is important because it is a major source of income for the county government. When county residents are hired for county government positions, a percentage of their salary will go back into prince georges county government in the form of income tax. This means that the county will be less dependent on property tax as a revenue source, which will in turn help our Prince George's County homeowners.
One of the main things that I would try to do in office is try to maintain our AAA bond rating. This is important because this bond rating acts as a credit score for the county. With a AAA rating, the county can borrow funds at a lower cost. Our current policy states that we should keep our debt payments below 8% of our total budget for the year. If we do not keep it below 8%, it can affect our AAA bond rating. If we do not maintain this rating, then we are not able to borrow money for needed projects such as bridge safety, roadway improvement, libraries, fire stations, and many more.
In addition, if elected, one thing that I would never vote for is to use our fund balance to pay for reoccurring costs. The fund balance is the amount of money left from all budgets from previous fiscal years. If money from the fund balance is spent on reoccurring costs such as schools or salaries, maintenance of efforts, which is a policy that the state passed that states that you cannot spend less than what you spent in the previous years would require us to spend that much all years forward. means we would spend the same amount next year.
